engine spluttering?

Hi guys, earlier this morning I was running some errands and stopped at 3 shores. When I started my car everything was fine. Everything was fine when I started the car after the first 2 stores I went to. HOWEVER, after the 3rd store, I started up my car, the engine was shaking rapidly and the and the RPM was unstable for about 10 seconds, then finally stabilized at about 500 RPM, which was low compared to normal idling RPM. the engine was also stuttering. On the way home, the CEL came on, but it goes off sometimes. After 30 minutes, I started it up again to see if the same problem occurs, it did, but this time it was not shaking or stuttering as bad. The CEL stayed on and the idling RPM was then stabilized at 500 RPM again.

Can anyone tell me what could have caused this problem? Thank You.

#1: what car???????????????????

#2: Well, what's the CEL for? Unless you tell us it's like finding a needle in a haystack by hand. If you tell us what the CEL is, it;s like finding a lead brick in a kiddie pool with a metal detector.

got the code

Postby Bboy_307 » Fri Jan 22, 2010 12:09 pm

so i just took my car (2001 Toyota Solara SE) to autozone and had them run the OBDII to pull the code. the guy told me it was "CYLINDER 1 MISFIRE" i was not able to get the actual number code from them but I searched online and the code to that is PO301.

I don't think its from my spark plugs, since I got new ones about 15,000 miles ago.

Can you guys give me ways I can tell what is causing this misfire?

You should take out the plug and see what condition it is in. Make sure the coil connection is on there securely. Also if you used dielectric grease on the plugs, clean it off, it is a poor-conductor. I would check the plug before anything else. And like Frank said, check the wire.
