Left Fog Light Burning Out

Left Fog Light Burning Out

Postby mightymouse402 » Sun Oct 25, 2009 12:19 am

Hello all,

I seem to be having a problem with my left driver side fog light. I noticed it was burned out a couple of weeks ago, so I thought it was a bad bulb, and changed both. It burned out again tonight and when I took the bulb out, I noticed that the female portion of the plug (the non bulb end) was burned and a bit melted. I don't know what the heck that means, but If anyone could shed some light on this problem, please let me know.

Any helpful responses are appreciated.

Thanks!

I have not experienced any problems with light bulbs, nor have I changed any on my Solara since I got it in January 2009, but from past experiences with other cars, two things come to mind. One is faulty wiring, and the other is using the wrong size bulb. Actually the tail end of any bulb is considered male and the socket that the bulb is placed in is considered female for obvious reasons. Therefore, most bulbs are considered male. Have you done anything to your car that may have damaged the wiring on that side so that a wire might be exposed and is grounding out? Are you absolutely certain that you are using the correct size bulb? Those are the only two things that I can think of, but good luck in finding the real problem. jimmm

I've had that problem before.
I just changed the plug.
I think it's the bulb.
My friend gave me some 3500K yellow bulbs, but 1 of the bulbs where the plug goes it is burnt lookin', and the other one was fine, i'm guessin' it's the bulbs that are messed up??

I'm certain that I am using the right bulbs. I'm using nokya yellow fogs 9006. It never gave me problems before until just recently. Thanks for the responses and if there are anymore suggestions out there let me know. Thanks!

using bulbs that fit may not the the "right" bulb.

what's the wattage output?

if it's 55w or higher, that's the culprit of burning the socket.

happened to me when i was young and dumb... iwas using 85w output in low beams and it ate through the socket... killed my high beam app.

im a residential electrician so my experience doesn't necessarily cross over to cars at all as i work on ac current and cars use dc current.

THAT being said. sounds to me like a loose connection.

the plug (coming off the car) is probably faulty. in this case it doesn't matter what bulb you use the problem will happen again. as current flows through the connector on the back of the bulb the loose connection gets HOT. replace the connector.
