P0135 code explanation?

Hi everybody, I was wondering if someone could help me with my 2003 solara V6 engine 1MZ-FE. My CEL light came on and I got a P0135 DTC. I looked it up and it's my oxygen sensor located at bank 1 sensor 1. I was wondering if someone could tell me what is meant by bank 1, bank 2, sensor 1 and sensor 2. From what I got from this forum, bank 1 is which catalytic converter its on. I believe the catalytic converter for bank 1 is between the engine and the firewall(wall between the drivers seat and the engine compartment) and bank 2 is between the engine and the radiator. I'm not too sure what the difference between sensor 1 and sensor 2 is. My cousin told me sensor 1 was always upstream. Is upstream the same thing as saying before catalytic converter? If someone could clarify or correct me, that would be wonderful. Thank you in advance

I forgot to ask if the bank 1, sensor 1 and bank 2 sensor 1 use the same O2 sensor? I'm trying to look for the part i need and I get confused on the terminology. Should i be looking for a part that's upstream/preCat and does it matter whether or not it says front or rear?

This is just for reference sake for anybody with this problem next time. I have a 2003 solara automatic federal spec with a v6 engine. I received a check engine light and got the dct being p0135. This was a short in my O2 sensor located on bank 1 sensor 1(on the back of the engine near the firewall). Removing the bank 1 sensor 1 O2 sensor had the inscription:
Toyota
89467
~41030
Denso0161

I'm not too sure about this, but I'm pretty confident that the bank 2 sensor 1 O2 sensor(the one near the radiator and easiest to get to) is the same number and model. Looking for a replacement for this O2 sensor, I went to densoaftermarket.com to look for which part I needed. It listed four parts:
234-4622 - OE Style; Front; Standard

234-9021 - OE Style; Front; Automatic

234-4137 - OE Style; Rear; Standard

234-4137 - OE Style; Rear; Automatic

I bought the 234-4137 as my car is automatic and thought the rear meant rear of the engine(bank1 sensor1). It turned out that this part didn't have the right connection to replace the bank1 sensor1 and looked as if it fit the bank1,sensor2(after the catalytic converter). Here's a pic of what i mean.
Image

The 234-9021 looks like what I need to replace my part even though it says front. I'm assuming that front means that it's for the whole engine(bank 1 and 2, sensor 1) and that rear means after the catalytic converter(bank 1 sensor 2). If you're looking for a Bosch product, the 13540 is used for both before catalyst front and rear.
Use this site to look it up:
http://www.boschautoparts.com/Resources ... artFinder/
13540 Oxygen Sensor - OE Type Before Catalyst Front; A/T; Check /
13540 Oxygen Sensor - OE Type Before Catalyst Rear; A/T; Check /
13353 Oxygen Sensor - OE Type After Catalyst A/T; Check /

So the bosch website also leads me to believe that both the front and rear use the same model for the oxygen sensor and that the denso site was slightly wrong or I was just confused on how they distinguished between the oxygen sensor.

Hopefully this can be used a reference and will help people out. BTW, it was a pain getting the rear oxygen sensor off. To get the electrical connector off, I had to press a release notch and wiggle it out. Just be gentle and it should come off eventually. For the sensor itself, i bought the O2 sensor tool with a crows feet and attached my wrench. I added a metal pipe for extra leverage and more torque. I eventually got it off but it was a pain. Good luck to all you DIY'ers.

I went through this a couple months ago when I bought my 2000 coupe. The sensor style, plugs and pin positions were different on the aftermarket sensor than on the OEM. After exchanging sensors twice for the same problem at Carquest, I gave up on getting it there and went straight to the closest Toyota dealer where it was the correct part the first time AND it was half the price!

Bank 1 is the exhaust manifold closest to the firewall, sensor 1 is before the CAT. Bank 2 is the exhaust manifold closest to the radiator. Sensor 2 is after the CAT. Some engines have 3 sensors in total and some have 4. Your dealer should be able to identify how many and what type you have according to VIN#.

Ordered the part for my car and put it in and no more check engine light. For my 2003 solara v6, the two O2 sensors upstream before the catalytic converter used Denso 234-9021. I just replaced the one on the rear and everything works fine. Even my "trac off" light went off.

unless you have calif spec, those issues aren't as frequent. Your sensors are also alot cheaper.
That's weird that the denso ones had different connectors. Am guessing safety feature to prevent plugging in the wrong kind?

i bet son of zarn originally got the more-expensive cali spec, but his car is fed spec....

hence the different plugs
and also why the dealership was cheaper (when does THAT EVER happen?!?)

not to resurrect this, but can someone tell me which one to get for a 2000 solara to replace the bank 1 sensor. Can I take the sensor out and still drive the car? - that way I can compare the plug to the one I get at the auto shop

thanks

v6 or 4cyl? Bank 1 sensor is too general. On a v6, bank 1 can mean the one in the manifold or the one after the cat so we need to know if its sensor 1 or 2. You can just un-plug the connector when you get where ever you're going. If you took it out, you'd have an open hole with hot exhaust gases coming out and the ecu will be looking for that signal.

it is a V6. I can't remember which sensor it is, but I want to say #1. I will have to get under the car and make sure I know where they are so I can disconnect them easily at the auto store.

thanks

Bank 1 sensor 1 = rear manifold, bank 2 sensor 1 = front manifold, bank 1 sensor 2 = after the cat. B1S1 requires a lift (well maybe not required but it makes things A LOT easier) B2S1 is cake. IIRC B1S2 requires removing the drivers seat.
