Proper o2 sensor, Denso, and DIY

Proper o2 sensor, Denso, and DIY

Postby tapakidney » Sat Oct 18, 2008 12:08 pm

Hey guys, I've been through the forums and gotten every bit of useful info I can get from search, but am still left with a few questions and concerns.

Error p0135, o2 sensor, Bank 1 Sensor 1.

There seem to be a lot of inconsistencies about which part to get when I speak to different places. A toyota repair place said the part I need depends on my VIN... Is this just a matter of Cali/non-cali? If I KNOW that I don't need cali, and I go to this website: http://www.densoproducts.com/resultsApp.asp and look up my car, will the part it lists DEFINITELY be the right part? If so, it seems I can get a Denso o2 sensor for $85...awesome.

For DIY, a few questions:

1.) I need penetrating lubrication. Will wd40 do the trick here? do I need something special?

2.) Removal tool - Any autozone, etc. will lend me one, right?

3.) I have seen helpful diagrams, but none of them describe how to unclip the wires. I have messed with the hookups and can't seem to unclip them. Any advice?

Thank you all for your help!

1) pb blaster
2) the o2 sensor wrench costs like $8 at autozone
3) the clip for the wires is very simple, press the button and pull out the connector. go back in and examine how to negotiate your arms through the frame, youll figure it out

I still have p0171, which is also B1S1... good luck

I had the same code, P0135 B1S1 and I used denso o2 sensor, with a basic wrench (that has a notch for the wire, o2 wrench in other words) and with a little pb blaster (as stated above) broke it lose, unplugged the wire which is about 6 inches or so long and reversed the instructions for install. The hardest part is finagling your arms and hands around the back of the motor and the firewall.

Good luck 8)

Thanks for the responses! So the o2 sensor that the Denso site sells will definitely work in my car?

Get the Denso OE identical sensors, two (2) of part number 234-4622. If one has gone bad, the other is not far behind.

note: if you are california-spec, you must buy the more expensive air/fuel sensors, not O2!

The connector is like any automotive electrical connector. There is a little flexy-plastic button you push in to release the lock while simultaneously pulling the connector apart.

Having a warm engine can make it easier to break the old sensors loose if necessary.

I just did this last week. I used the denso sensor and have yet to have a CEL or any negative effects.

Does anyone have a pic of where the B1S1 O2 sensor is located (99 SLE)? I know before the cat con and between the firewall and engine... But do I go at it from under the hood or do I have to jack the car up and go from underneath? Any pic woudl be greatly appreciated... Thanks

From up top, on driver's side. If you long skinny arms like mine,
it won't be an issue. If you still need help let me know. You asked 15 days ago.
Trust me, I'm a technician.
