It looks like a small black chin spoiler - I'm talking about the piece that you hear a lot of people scrape on tall parking spot blocks/curbs. What is this officially called and is it important? Mine was hanging by a thread until I ripped it off yesterday (probably got damaged from driving through the deep water we got from TS fay).

I think it helps route air to the radiator.

What he said... you'll probably want to replace it ASAP.

Definately replace this piece. Although these plastics are seemingly for decoration or just to keep mud and water from the engine bay, they serve a few other important purposes. One is definately as before mentioned keeping air routed correctly to the radiator. Another is keeping air routed correctly for proper aerodynamics. And in some rare conditions it can be also used to keep air from getting to the engine (to keep from overcooling). So yes they are important. Name? Depends on the company and the person. Air dams are usually what they're called.

its mostly to avoid splashing into your engine bay as first post said.

The air that goes to the radiator goes thro the grill...

I don't think is that important. Its beter to replace it but its not a must. Since you drive into a lot of water, then u should replace it.
