Woodgrain Removal Help

Postby 00-solara » Wed Jul 09, 2008 5:20 pm

I'm tired of looking at woodgrain that's getting those beautiful bubbles in it. Anybody here removed it or atleast found a somewhat less painstaking way to remove it? Any hints or helps would be much appreciated. Also any way to clean or make the black look good again?

you have to pull on it , to get it of the glue and plastic thats holding it to the dash, then you can sand it down and do as you please with it

For the black trim, I recommend Forever Black. You may have to order it online since I've only seen it at dealerships, but it's what they use to make bumpers look new again. It's a permanent die, but it works wonders. I've done the dashes in all of my cars with it.

The woodgrain that i'm attempting to get rid of is the stupid stuff they stick on with idk what kind of foam tape stuff. I really wish it had not come with the car. I don't mind the clipped on dash stuff it doesnt peel and whatnot.

And thanks looks like the method i've been using is the recommended one haha.

Im going to second this. I decided one day to start pulling it off of my drivers side door, and I got it halfway there and then CRACK, it broke off. I had to use some special glue to glue it back on, not funn.

yep, I had the exact stuff in my car. I just painted it black for a while and then one day I left it sit in 100+ degree texas weather and it just peeled off with NO problem. If you can't let it sit in heat, try a blow dryer and careful hand to pull it off. start around the clock area.

- Remove the ash tray
- remove the cig lighter
- if manual remove the ball on the top of the stick by turning
- grab the frame from where the ashtray was and pull on it, its held in place by clips.
- There will be a electrical cable connected to where the cig lighter was, after u pull on the frame , you'll be able to unplug it and continue pulling on the frame untill the top

I removed my old wood grain with a hair dryer and installed a replacement kit.

Looks brand new. Was very easy but somewhat time consuming - the glue is hard to get off and then you have to clean the surface before applying the new kit.

The kits arent too bad. Think I paid $120 for a full fledged kit (had some pieces I didnt use). Saw them for cheaper, but the one I got was a guaranteed OEM match.

Are there any aftermarket interior trims for our car? Not to big of a fan of that cheap plastic wood trim, not that it's the worst I've seen.

Thanks everyone!
I managed to get it off except for the piece around the radio and ac piece.
There is still some remaining glue on some pieces but it doesn't seem to want to come off. I'll try again at a later date.

There are some out there that are pretty much what comes on the car minus the strips along the dash and doors

goo-gone might help get rid of the glue residue as well as (believe it or not) WD-40.

I tried goo gone, goo gone extreme they worked alright but that glue was def victorious in some places.
I'm afraid WD-40 will mess up the black color.
Considering most of the pieces they put wood grain on cost $100+ new from dealership I didn't want to risk some of it.
