Help!!! fuel filter question

Postby alltrac92 » Wed Jul 02, 2008 7:18 pm

Okay I bought a new fuel filter for my 2000 Camry V6 and it is now leaking from the bottom 14mm bolt/line it did not come with a crush washer for the bottom fuel line and I did not find one on the old filter either. Any ideas? do the aftermarket filters come with a crush washer?

itll do that since its been rusted...release the fuel pressure by opening the gas cap (leave the engine off), take the filter off agian, put teflon tape around the thread of the bolt, not to obscure the hole that the fuel comes out though, just once around the thread and then bolt it on agian. It will resolve the leak.

Thanks for the tip Dawgz. funny thing was there was no rust and it came off easy. I used a 14mm flare wrench and a 19mm to hold the base of the filter. I bought my Camry from the bay area original owner California car. I did notice some red paint like sealant on the bottom of the filter. my guess was that it was the original filter, does the factory or dealership use some type of liquid sealant?

i have no idea, but when i took my old one off to put the high flow from jim's fuel mod, it was leaking a bit, and the teflon took care of it...

I believe i also suggested this to someone else on the forum and it worked for them.

Found the problem and it did not require any type of thread sealant. It is the flare that seals, not the threads. When you buy a Toyota fuel filter it comes already mounted in a new bracket. My mistake was mounting the filter/bracket to the frame rail first and then inserting the fuel pipe and screwing in the flare nut.

What you need to do first is to place the fuel line into the bottom of the filter and get it so it seats completely level flat. Then slide up up the flare nut and start screwing it into the filter until it bottoms out. Use a 19mm on the bottom of the filter to stabilize it and a 14mm flare wrench and tighten it. Then bolt down the fuel filter/bracket to the frame rail and repeat the tightening process of the fuel line once more.
