I was reading another post saying how quiet his six was. The four cyl. I got is kinda noisy. Is that the norm? I did put some mobil synthetic in when I first got it home. It quieted in down some but still a little noisy.

What year car do you have? Mine is very quiet.

I changed over to mobil1 5w30 and it seemed to be even more quiet, but then again it could just be in my head. Kind of how a clean car feels faster :)

Just bought a used 2000 w/109k miles. Could be in my head though. It's not so much noisy in the cabin as it is outside the vehicle. Probably not used to it. I had a new 2002 neon (don't laugh) for about a month that sounded like my dad's old diesel gulf from inside the car.

Well before you blame the engine, what kind of "noise" is it? Or do you just mean it's noisey in general?

I thought mine was just "noisey" too and then as time went on it turned into a grinding noise and then a replaced water pump and timing belt. Haha, that's some noise right there when you have a frayed and almost snapped belt.

5sfe makes alot of noise. as long as there is no knocking noise and with decent performance, you should be ok

I think it's just the nature of the engine. My wife's 04 accord ex 4 is noisy from the front. My tundra on the other hand makes a lot of ticking sounds. I also just put some yoko avid trz's on today. What a smooth riding car.

^^ what he said, 5sfe in a/t is notorious for noise. If you think there is a knock, then go to a higher fuel grade, i know my car doesn't like 87.

yep. might help to be specific about the noise-as in where.
am saying this coz i have taken apart virtually every panel inside and the solara has lots (if not the most) of dampening material, making both the 4 and 6 quiet.
strange though is the fact that i could pinpoint a noisy engine belt the moment it started squeeking
