hi guys,
I had a serious problem with my solara today ( 00 solara v6 stick-shift)
When I was driving down the hill, suddenly the check engine light came on, and then the engine went off, brakes got heavier, stopped. when I tried to start the car, there was a cranking sound but the car wont work. I dont think that it's the battery. I got it towed to my mechanic. They will take a look at it tomorrow. I would like to get you idea before I deal with the mechanic.. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance...

There are so many things that it could be that it isn't really worth talking about. You might have skipped teeth on a timing belt (although it'd probably run, but for $h|t) Your fuel pump might have gone out, your ignition maybe bad. The hamster might have had a heart attack. There might be catastrophic engine damage or something simple and cheap...

If you knew the CEL code it'd be a bit easier to guess. Did it come ON or was it flashing?

thanks for your answer , but I guess there would be a significient sound from the engine if the timing belt did break down? the car hsa 105k miles on it and the I havent changed the timingbelt.
by the way one of my friends has just told me that, there might be a safety sytem that would turn off the vehicle in case something does not work properly. solara has something like this??

No, the car wont shut itself off, instead the check engine light will come on.

When my timing belt broke on me while driving, I didn't get a CEL.

here is the result guys:
timing belt broke down! And they also changed water pump and the brakes as with that! Suprisingly it didnt give any harm to the engine! When the timng belt broke down my Opel Astra (europian car) it gave seious harm to engine and other parts.

The total cost $869! But now I feel like the car vibrates on the high way!

Wait.. Opel? Where do you live? I'm not sure about Opel, but our Solaras have something called a "non-interference" design, meaning the insides are designed to not cause damage if the timing belt dies.

The vibrating might be your alignment, since if the car died out while driving it might've messed up something.
