Parking Brake Light

Parking Brake Light

Hello there,

New problem to be solved...

My 99 SLE with about 88k miles just started to light up the parking brake on the console while driving. Usually it does it for a few miles at the beginning of a trip then it turns off. I try to raise the brake slightly and ease it back down but that didn't help. I checked the brake fluid and it was full. Sometimes it would actually go on and off a few times.

What do you think should be done, now?

This is just a total guess on my part so check the service manual, but there's probably a button or switch that is engaged when the parking brake arm is released. (Shutting off the light.) Brake pedals have a similar setup that lights the brake lights when it's not engaged.

Sometimes these switches are damaged, loose or need to wear pads to be adjusted. Look around the arm assembly and see if you find a switch like that. Then see if it is maybe missing the contact surface it is supposed to hit or if you can adjust it out some more.

Post up pictures as you look for the problem. Good luck.

Yeah, the problem was just that...brake fluid.

I didn't think it could be that because the fluid was already to the rim, but I dumped a little more in there anyways. That fixed it.

Of course, many people said its an indication of brakes going bad. My rears are fine (I just changed both rear bearings this weekend), but I was told my front one would last for about 3 more months.
