car will not start after 5 speed swap *update* 9/19/09

i briefly remember reading a post onhere from scv6's tranny swap where he said his car would not start with the manual ecu. and it was the key issue. like i said when i had the manual ecu in, the car wanted to turn over it just wouldnt. so i think your idea about the key being programed to my ecu and not the manual is pretty spot on. i can prob get the vin# from calling the junkyard or maybe talking to toyota. no idea if they will do it for me, i know you have to show insurance to get a key made and programmed there.

also thaks for the other info too! i still have no idea why my tranny is making a grinding noise :(

quick update guys, i talked to greg today (super nice guy, he def knows his crap, i was just soaking up the information haha) we think for sure the reason the manual ecu is not turning over is b/c it has an immobilizer in it that is not recognizing the signal my existing key is sending it. thats why when i plugged back in the auto ecu it fired right up.

thanks again to ozone for his detailed pictures :D

we also think we have the grinding noise nailed down. i do not want to post much about it until we confirm it. but once i have answers i will let yal know. peacee

craig, my 98 doesn't have an immobilizer. i know this because a couple of my keys are plain metal and therefore can't have a chip in them. I t would be a good test to put my ecu in your car and see if it works. If it does, then you just need to source an ECU with the same p/n as mine.

it's either that or try simulating the shift solenoids and stuff... *shrug*

as i said, this is a non-transponder ECU. I don't have the security light in my tach, and my keys are plain metal - no chip.

for reference, what's the stuff on your immobilizer 5spd ecu so people know not to buiy that one

and of course we still need to pop my ecu into your car and make sure it starts with it! it should, but you never know...

then we gotta fix that lovely grinding noise...

well guys i have good news and bad news.

bad news first. the junk yard who had my donor vehicle and told me they had the ignition cylinder and transponder key does not...ummm wtf????? i was upset but w/e life goes on right

ok now for the good news. greg completely saved me on this one. the hideous grinding noise i was hearing was from a shim i forgot to take out behind the flywheel! i would have never known had greg not told me there were 2 shims. totally a great guy who is an asset to have in this community.

so anyways ill keep this short. damage to bell housing was so minimal it was ridiculous. just a tiny scratch on the inside, not even worth a picture. anyways im glad this is sorted out and im going to go ahead and put a stage 3 clutch in while everything is apart since i plan on being boosted in a few months.

ill let everyone know what i do about the ecu. using the auto one is not an option for me. i will figure this out!

ok and now i know how you all like pictures!!!

Image
fu stupid shim i hate you, may you burn in hell

Image
o looky here a shim coming off :)

Image
ok now we can put the flywheel on..

Image
o yay more crap to put back on my car. this is getting old

Image
separation

Image
and 1+1=2 yea i know i know but im mad

kind of wierd that jons page didnt mention this or king didnt say anything. i guess im just an idiot. o well gotta live to learn. victory is mine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hmmm....interesting....glad to hear that you figured it out though.

and yes....I took one of those shims out....I think I did so because I compared the auto and the 5-speed shop manuals and the auto tranny had the extra shim

don't tell me you tackled this without going through the manuals as well and just did it from what we said!?!!? lol

he had my shop manual. but ya when he put it back on i could easily see how it looked like it was just the end of the crank. the shim is chamfered on all holes, and with a little loctite and dirt in there, it really did look like an extension of the crank. live and learn, eh?

and yeah, we tried putting my ecu into his car. no go. his ecu is indeed 5 plug, mine's 4, and there's no way it'll work that way. now to find an ecu WITH the frickin key that is paired with it. stupid anti-theft devices...

short of jerry-rigging his a/t ecu to make it think it has a tranny attached, the only other alternative would be getting a massive wiring diagram, and a harness cut to convert his 5 plugs into 4. too much margin for error there...

If I was there, I'd do that for you guys.

It's not as much work as it seems.

of course, with my luck, there would be some other immobilizer crap that would come up and bite us after hours of rewiring. path of least resistance is finding a 5-plug ecu AND the key that's already paired to it, so that he can at least get new ones programmed. less hacking.
