No special tools in my case. Just separating and attaching. Done many. Permanent scars.

soooo i got outat 4 this evening and i was destined to get the back 3 sparkplugs ( after quiting 2 times) i borrowed a swivel and was able to get cylinder 5. i jumped and screamed F$*K YEA!!! the other 2 were easier, can take them out normally... took me about 1hr 15min. for all 3..

buuuut my check engine light is still on and i still feel like a stutter or or hesitation when i rev it up. i took it to autozone 10 minutes after finishing, just yesterday i pulled a misfire in all cylinder except cyl 2. and running lean.. i cleared it.. this afternoon it said all cylinders misfiring cept cyl 1. so when i changed them all nwo it only say cyl 5 misfire and running lean in bank 1.
The autozone guy which seemed pretty knowledgable said to wait it out because the code wont clear after 10 minutes changing.. hoepefully he is right cuz i really wana DRIVE this car not baby it and worry.

well here is the pics of 3 of the spark plugs that was in it.. the one above the 3 is the new NGK IRADIUMS the first one on the left is from the front cyl. and the next 2 are from the rear.. the other pic is what they did to my hand gettin them out lol

Yep, those are the right marks on your hand from changing the rear plugs. The middle and the left plugs are symptomatic of fuel/air mixture out of whack. The black is soot/carbon. The right plug is normal in a properly running engine. You can clean and re-gap the middle and left plug and put them back until you figure out the problem and then put the new plugs in.

Clear the codes. Then start to trouble shoot.

I suspect the true codes are rich mixture given the color of the plugs.

How many miles on your ODO? Oxygen sensors start to go right around 100k.
I'm at 127k+ and just replaced the third sensor.
Are there any other problems with the car, such as weak start/ hard start?
Is the air filter clean (remember the dust you mentioned).
If you have an original Toyota filter you can clean it up yourself, enough to help.
Check the PCV valve. It's a $4 part and it can cause minor drivability issues.
Trust me, I'm a technician.

the shakes when idle.. in drive when i let go of the break it shakes a lot and when i get to about 5 mph when braking..
it is still pulling up misfires after changing all the sparkplugs.. so now im going to change the wires...
it also pulled up 2 new codes
p1153 which i dont kno
and p0125 - closed loop fuel control, insufficent coolent temp
which to me sounds like the thermostat which im going to change now since its only like $25
i ill change the pcv valve as well..
when reving the car in neutral or park its like a stutter... does rev normal like a loss of power

You're right on with the thermostat, go ahead and change that.
It could be the root of the issue. As a stuck open t-stat will make
the engine run too cold, which...even in AZ is a bad thing.

Insufficient spark strength will cause hesitation and rough idle
like you're experiencing. So you're probably good to change
the wire now too.

P1153 is the O2 sensor malf. on bank 2. That might be the only other problem.
Don't worry though, it's the one you see when you pop the hood.
So it's easy to change. If you have Cali emissions, that's an expensive sensor.
But not too bad if you're fed. spec.
Trust me, I'm a technician.

Thanks, I like my rims too.
Once you get this stuff straightened out you can
actually start to enjoy your Solara.
Which after all, is what it's all about right? :sweet:

I'm not sure what a shop would charge, but expect to pay at least $60/hr. of labor.

I bought my NGK wire set (TE65) from eCrater.com for $37.95.
Didn't have any issues with the seller, and the wires are great.
Turns out that store doesn't carry them anymore though.
But I did a quick search and found this: http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/detai ... wid82Vf9Kj
It's a lot cheaper than $60. I don't know how much shipping would be though.

OH, don't worry about the coil packs. They are very unlikely to be the problem.
Trust me, I'm a technician.

Pull the cover off the timing belt and look at the teeth. All the teeth should be present.

I would do this before anything else. It could be as simple as a worn out timing belt. The other thing is to check when it was changed (if possible).
