WHAT BRAND AND TYPE OF OIL DO YOU USE

Postby mazen222 » Sun Oct 19, 2008 9:25 am

i use oil from Ultramar... i heared its recycled oil... thats the worst you can put in your car. I dont really pay attention to that, i just change it every 4k km.

Im switching to synthetic soon, but all the mechanics told me its just a waist of money. They say its better u stay with regular and change more often.. soo, i dont know

Yep, I use 5W-30 Castrol Syntec all year round, considered switching to Mobil 1 or valvoline but decided to stay with Castrol Syntec, and please don't get 40 weight. Your 1MZ's oil pump will hate it. You won't notice a difference other than the price when 30 weight is what the oil cap and owners manual says to use. Want to see a difference in your engines economy and maybe some power? Go from conventional to synthetic.

i agree that synthetic is a waste, i don't see any significant advantages to using synthetic. save money! syntec all the way

I know I said I use castrol syntec, but just monday I got some info back from my mechanic friend and he coudnt stop saying good things about amsoil. Its a 100 percent synthetic and the oil and filter will continue to lubricate up to around 20,000 miles. IMO I think this is the best oil out there. Needless to say when I change my oil (this friday) it will be with 5 quarts of 5w-30 amsoil with an amsoil filter.

sorry to confuse you, i didnt mean to hate on synthetic the OIL, i meant to hate on synthetic prices, my bad... i like synthetic don't get me wrong, but I found the $3-4 difference per quart isn't worth full synthetic. Its $8 a qt for Mobil1 here.. versus $5 for the syntec

me: mobil 1 'synthetic' (blend) 5w-30 with mobil 1 filter

it seems (and anyone correct me if i'm wrong in my assumptions), that the higher performance true synthetic oils (eneos, amsoil, redline, royal purple) are meant mostly for racing applications. my guess, the blend potion of the lesser 'synthetics' is used to stabilize the oil, to prevent premature breakdown.

mobile 1 seems to have great consumer support, meaning the product is going to be widely applicable, and very stable for all those applications. that would be the upside to a popular product, it seems to be taylored to a wide cross-section of the market (from daily driver tuners, to high end luxury, to jalopies (although who'd waste the money on mobile 1 on a '79 junker)).

for the price, i'm gonna keep using mobile 1, but if i ever build a race car, i'd probably use redline, amsoil, eneos, or RP.

other considerations when chosing oil that were mentioned in this thread:
weather: san antonio is usually 85+ degrees (for about 8-9 months of the year), then 'cold' for the other 3-4 months (it freezes here maybe once or twice a year)

driving style: hard and heavy. i just blew my auto transmission, need i say more?

miles/year: 13-16k miles annually.

DatSRBoi wrote:You do not need 40 weight unless its super hot outside and your racing way too hardcore. As a matter of fact supra owners with 4-800whp do not even go past 30 weight. Its just not needed and it puts a lot of stress on your pump.

Royal purple is a good oil BUT it was meant for racing and not daily. It performs well but it breaks down fast even though people have claim 10K mile with no problem. Yes the oil itself can handle 10K drives but the make up of the oil fails faster then mobil 1.. Mobil one is the middle man of all oil. It has its perks and all but over all it is the most reliable oil you can buy. castro syn is also doing well but its somewhat still behind.

Redline stuff is very good stuff too but its name explains itself. Meant for racing and not daily. It can handle daily but it will eventually break down. My supra is using redline tranny and lsd oil only while the engine uses strictly 5w20 in the winter and 10w30 for summer in mobil one full syn

Majority rule is winter use the 20 weight and summer use the 30 weight. If your car requires anything out of that range, your running a fully built race car. And if its not a fully built race car, somethings wrong with your car or where you live. ALSO try not to switch oil too much. Switching to different types too often and hurt your seals.

verdad, i know how it feels...i just took my lara back in the shop today because she was leaking tranny fluid. i was considering doing a swap, but i found a cheap salvage one...650 for parts, and 630 for labor..... a manual swap woulda cost me around 5-6 thousand. i'll save that for another day.

so the tranny i got to put in had 67k miles on it, which is not bad (and it came from an 02...three years newer :)).
