High ga prices means switching grades?

The manual says 87 is fine, but 89 or higher is recommended. At least for the 1mz.

Stop looking at performance gain but rather your engines life. If it recommends 89 plus it really doest mean it. Running lower grade over time hurts your piston rings and much more. Get into a high performance car that runs low grade for months and years and you can see it right through the idle.

Higher grade helps keep the engine from detonating and hurting it in the long run.

I dont know, I have always ran 91. I figure that the difference btwn 87 and 91 has always been 20 cents, so I have always paid the same difference ($3.60 on a full tank) whether its now or 3 years ago. If you guys go down to a lower grade I would suggest Chevron since it has the Techron additive in every grade (I believe).

I filled my tank tonight, and I found myself using ~4.6 gallon for ~74 miles... resulting me with 15.4mpg... ouch...

I think you're right, I think the gas price is making the price difference between octanes much more insignificant.

If 87 was 20cents, and 91 was 40cents, I'm sure most people will get 87 for half the price on gas, but if 87 was $100, and 91 was $100.20, people wouldn't mind paying the extra 20cents for the "better" fuel.

The only thing is figuring out which one is "better" for our car.

2 weeks ago I've put 91 octane, at first I felt a "boost" but after few days I felt that it was "like before". So I came back to cheaper gaz 87 octane and it change nothing on my performance. I have the 1MZFE, stock.

The difference is very psychological here, like Grnarowana said.

But I readed that the manual recommend 91 octane for the V6... But 87 is ok and the car adapt itself so no problem!

I've run 87 in all of my cars and they have all lasted for over 200,000 miles (89' civic, 92 camry, 92' accord, 99' solara). They all still drove like champs when I sold them. Now my Solara has 170,000 and all I've used is 87 and have never had a single problem. I don't think 87 is bad for the engine by any means. Either that or I'm just a lucky person.

i gotta agree with that. I just ran 87 in my car from a full tank down to 1/4 and it's a got a hesitation below 3k at WOT (possibly retarding timing??) So i filled up with 92 this morning....$4 difference between that and the cheap stuff, or midgrade with 10% ethanol. And no, it's not psychological for me....it really is sluggish

You people have to remember that ethanol has a lower energy content than regular gas. E100 has a high octane than any 87, 89, 91 or 93 fossil fuel, but you will experience lower mileage.

Just keep in mind guys, that running 87 octane all the time will kill the Cat sooner...or so i hear.

but 87 octane should be fine for the v6 (n/a) but, id use atleast 89 octane on a N/A 1mz.
