Caliper piston not retracting

Caliper piston not retracting

Postby HydroponiK » Thu Mar 18, 2010 5:36 pm

A few days ago driving on the highway, my car started violently shaking so I pulled over to inspect but could not find any issues. When I got home however I noticed a small amount of smoke was coming out of the front passenger-side wheel well. The rotor didn't look smooth and the wheel was super hot.

I set up an appt for the dealer to check it out today, but when I got there the rotor looked fine. They inspected and said the caliper piston was sticky and not retracting properly. They offered to replace the calipers for $750 which I declined b/c that seemed way too much for the work being performed.

Does anyone know what would cause the caliper piston to not retract properly? Are there any cheaper fixes? I don't plan to keep this car much longer so not looking to throw a lot of money, but need it fixed for safety.

Cheapest would be to either rebuild it or replace it entirely. Either can be done yourself.

Could the brake lines also cause the issue?

Your brake lines are fine. It's just wear and tear. After a certain amount of time, and mileage, a caliper will seize. This will cause it to stick instead of retract.

I say get a rebuilt part and replace it yourself. It's easy.

I'm not exactly mechanically inclined, especially with brakes. I could possibly bring it to a mechanic tho and have them replace it for me.

Is this the correct part I should be buying?
