worried about my car

worried about my car

Postby TheBossMan » Mon Feb 22, 2010 5:57 pm

I have a 2002 solara 4cylinder. I just got an oil change a week ago and i noticed a deep sound coming from the engine or underneath the car when i took my car out to run errands today and i haven't had it all day because my mom asked to borrow the car while im at school, so i just noticed it now. It only happens when i start it.

It is currently 34 degrees here in Chicago and it's been really wet and snowy if that has anything to do with it. when i did a walk around everything sounded normal and i gave it some gas while driving and it sounded as it always does. It just happens when i start the car.

Is this leading to a serious problem or just what is it and what do i have to do to make it stop doing this. we bought it new and never had any problems with it. it just hit the 80,000 mile mark and i hope nothing seriosuly is wrong with it. the idling has also been not as steady but the mechanic said everything was good. I am driving to wisconsin this weekend and really need this solved ASAP

Nice, i been there a few times, never in the winter though.

i wouldn't think its anything serious, if it goes away. Does it do it when it a cold start or all the time when you start it?

it never did anything like this before but i remember having problems when it rained a lot last year with squeeking but it went away as it finally stopped raining

It just does it all the time, actually this morning it didn't do it and that was a cold start but now that's the car's warmed up it has been doing this

I also just got a video of it ^^^^

I was thinking that maybe something in the exhaust got eaten through (road salt or whatever), but if it goes away, it's probably not that.

have you changed the timing belt, or could be a hole in the exhaust, also could be the cat is clogged, or worn out....... :drinking:

thanks for all the replies. It actually feels like it's idling lower. and yea i was thinking it was the cat converter. but no i never got the timing belt changed because i thought it was only necessary for the v6. and i get the car washed a lot and always keep everything clean so i would hope nothing would of rotted out.

I'm leaving the car alone for the night and am hoping when i go to start it tomarrow it will be normal. if not im taking it to my mechanic after i get home from school.

Sounds like a exhaust leak.
2002-2003 gen 1.5 4 cyc 2AZ motors do not need time belt changed. They run on timing chain.
