Lightbulb cap in headlight

Lightbulb cap in headlight

Postby crossroad » Wed Jul 22, 2009 7:36 pm

will removing the reflective cap that covers the lightbulb in a headlight make the light intenser or does it actually serve its purpose. and if it will make it brighter, how do i remove it? Also, sometimes when making a sharp turn or going over a bump, my car makes a noise. some people when riding with says its like a scraping noise, but i really dont think it is. i done a little research and found it might be the cv boot, or something like that......

Well.. your scraping noise could be any number of things so I'm not gonna comment on that
But that "cap" you are describing in the headlight is important. DO NOT REMOVE IT. It wont make your lights brighter if you remove it. It will make your output look like shi.t.

The function of it is that it catches the forward going light and bounces it back into the housing of the headlight. This is why your headlight is coated in reflective "chrome", so that it may light up evenly and disperse light outwards.

If you want brighter lights, get an HID kit or get a projector retrofit.

By the way, here is a pic of light output from some after market headlights that had really bad reflectors. Can you imagine how terrible the headlight beam would look without a reflector at all?

If you remove that cap it'll be like having your high beams on all the time (when your lights are turned on). I'm assuming you have a gen 1, but on gen 1.5 lamps the hi and lo beams are in seperate reflectors/compartments inside the housing. The hi-beam bulbs are left completely uncovered and the lo-beams are just like how you describe them with that cap.

If they're that dim and you don't want to spend money on a kit then try replacing the bulbs with a better quality bulb. Though after a few times of replacing the bulb with high quality ones you've probably spent enough to buy a HID kit...

Get Sylvania Silverstars or Silverstar Ultras. I have them as my headlights and fogs. They're bright and relatively cheap (compared to HIDs). Also there is a thread or two on here for the independent fog light mod. You can do the indep. fl mod and have a bunch of extra light all the time from your fogs on. It makes a big difference.

Trust me, I'm a technician.

Are these too much? I have these and I love em. Not ebay knockoff HID bulbs. Very bright.

And this is my output. I aimed em down and this is on a lighted street too.

all i want is for my headlights to illuminate the road in front of me (being very dim) without the need to turn on my fog lights. They are practically new bulbs, but they dont illuminate much even compared to most of the cars on the road. when i shine them on a wall they look bright, could it mean that i have to adjust them so the point down towards the ground?
