Problem with the manual headlight switch

So it seems the headlights will turn on and off depending on the position of the stalk.

For example, if I turn on the headlights manually and try to use the turn signals, the light will turn off. When I use the signal again, it will turn on.

What could be causing the headlights to act like this? :drinking:

If it goes on by sensor, it works fine, only when I turn the lights on manually (like when it's raining).

Is it easy to remove and check? I have the Camry service manuals, but not sure which section this would be under.

2nd with the loose wiring or connection......im sure you can figure it out just by looking at it. it should not be complicated

Have you taken you dash apart lately? It could be the hazard button, I know if it is left un hooked you won’t get any turn signals at all. It would also be easiest to check.

Definitely not the hazard button, I've left it unplugged a few times when installing head units and was wondering why the signals didn't work lol

I've never taken apart the steering column tho, are there instructions in the service manual? I have a downloaded version and not sure which section it would be under.

it seems like somting is wrong in the stalk.? the assm. has three main parts light stalk and wipper stalk. They both plug into the switch body. the light stalk has the switches to control lights if you want to take it out and test it it will tell you how in the pdf's manual. I think you might want to just get a new one.

Switch position Tester connection Specified condition
Low beam 16 – 17 Continuity
High beam 7 – 16 Continuity
Flash 7 – 8 – 16 Continuity
If continuity is not as specified, replace the switch.

Yeah, from what I can gather, it's something with the stalk. If I move it around, I can see the lights turning on and off, so I suppose it's something with the wiring.

How do I get access to the stalk? Do you know which section in the pdf manuals this would be under?

tlm nick made a tutorial to have independent fog lights. It should be in the first 15 threads of the tutorial section. I beleive one of the first steps tells you how to get this apart. Its either 3 or 4 screws, 2 of them you have to turn the wheel to get at. From there everything just pulls apart.

I heard a story today of this guy who spent $700 for a turn signal bulb. Basically the car was doing funky stuff like when you step on the brake pedal the dome light would come on. It might be a good idea to check the bulbs first. If a filament went bad it could be causing a short, and you car to do similar funky stuff to what you described. Good Luck, let us know how it goes.
