Bad Motor... Where to go next..

Bad Motor... Where to go next..

Postby Slut » Sat Nov 08, 2008 7:08 pm

1mzfe... I believe it has a bad valve... Idle is a little rough so is the cranking... Starts up and runs fine, but there is pressure coming out of my breather. Im assuming thats more of a sign of a valve not seating... I am gonna do a compression test probably a leakdown test as well, but what do you all think I should do... Drop in another motor? Or try and fix this one? I am a mechanic and I do have everything I would need to do a motor swap, just want some opinions on whats the best route. Car cranks over like it has bad timing or bad compression in a cylinder, but once its running even with the supercharger it drives fine, just Ill eventually blow er up if I keep drivin it like this. Car is eating oil now because of this. Killin me...

Thanks guys.

I have a solution... Take some sand and pour it into the engine through the oil filler hole while it is running ... put a brick on the peddle, get a beer and a lawn chair and watch the show... THEN do a motor swap lol

What I'd do personally is pull the heads, inspect them and if they are salvageable then machine them, and run them with new/slightly used valve train. If not salvageable I'd look for new heads. Your block has no reason to be bad. If its running, your motor isn't seized (obviously) I think an engine swap would be an expensive option, unless there is serious damage to the cylinder head. Also whats the year and mileage on your Solara/Camry?

Sounds like bad rings, have you done a compressions test? if you have the tools and the know how, swap the engine with one from a dismantling yard, sounds like a walk in the park.car should be running good next day.I think its cheaper and less time consuming.

Jesus... heh.. Na the car runs great.... really does when driving it.. Just there is pressure coming out of the breather, which i assume means one of the valves isnt closing. Im gonna do a compression test tomorrow at work.. Motor swap is a little much for me right now, but you think id be able to just fix the head thats bad... Has 140k miles (99 solara) on it, and it was, basically still is, running great.. just now has a rough start and rough idle at cold...

140k? Man, mines a 97 1MZ and currently has ~220K+ and been boosted since 70k. Block is strong, might be rings as others have sair or a sticking valve. I've had that before.

Alright so for the bad news... Hooked up the scanner at the end of work to see since it runs roughest when its cold and first starts up if it would get any misfires.. Of course it did... cylinder 2 started jumpin away... so I popped the plug out.. did a comp test.... 80psi  cyl #4 next to it had 125psi... I poured a little oil in cyl #2 and tested it again... Compression went up to 135psi... I assume bad rings? Although a stuck valve is still in my head because honestly, I cant see having all good valves and so much pressure coming out of my breather port if the compression wasnt passing the valve... Honestly what next... New head, or new block? Ate a half a quart of oil due to this bad compression... Its the worst after its been sitting which is why I also tend to think oils just leaking past the valve seals when its off. Who thinks I burnt the rings n who thinks it just could be a valve... Even the way it is.. the car runs great and has power. Just never used to eat oil like it does now nor stumble a bit cause of the low compression.

Question: if a valve is leaking, how does the gas get into the crankcase?

Answer: it doesn't.

gas meaning just pressure right? not fuel gas... Im just thinking an intake valve isnt seating all the way and im losing compression by it?

I think he meant blow-by gasses (as in the rings). The info you gave us points to bad rings (oil consumption, low compression, etc).

Did you skip the leak down test?

Im doing the leakdown test tomorrow... Thatll really show what it is im hoping... Might even just pop off the front valve cover being easy enough when i do it.. Like i said.. it really blows because the car still drives and feels great...

ahh i see what ur sayin if i got bad rings.. the airs gonna pass the piston to the rod and fill the crankcase... should it basically all come out the pcv then? I just thinkin not about the air going down into the motor... Im gonna go pull the dipstick see if theres pressure... but I was thinkin the compression was goin up right into the valve cover... if it was possible heh. Maybe I cracked the head when it overheated... honestly who knows... I just got to get to the bottom of it.

edit... just pulled the dipstick.. yea pressure coming out of there too :'(
guess i ate a ring up... rebuild or junkyard motor?
