Sorry Mods... you can move this one if you deem it necessary.

I have been fighting this for a month and a half now, and it still persists,

I have read up a lot on previous issues with TRD rear swaybar bushings.... nothing, no squeaks, and everything is freeflowing, I even put some teflon lube in there.

Swaybar endlinks, chenged out, still thumping.

Changed out the rear trailing arm bushings..... still clunking

Strut mounts... thought that was the problem.... took the strut out of the corner (passenger side rear), re-tightened everything, which to my surprise everything was still tight, BTW 3 month old JIC coilovers, so its all good.

And the noise persists..... I think it may be the rear control arms, the adjustable one on the passenger side has some play in it, meaning the spherical bearing has no resistance in it. the driver side one is tighter, so it is relatively easy for me to deduce that this has to be the culprit to my issue.

any ideas?.... have I overlooked anything?
I'm thinking of changing the spherical bearing in the arms to conventional sealed bearings, which then eliminates the vertical, and lateral give that the spherical bearings have.

I have the same noise in my car, I changed the rear bushings with no solution. Not know what is that stupid noise :-? makes me mad. Some people say that it was the struts mounts but in your case you have JIC coil so dont know if is that. Anyway hope u can solve this problem! and hope i can find also a solution,.....

The JIC coilovers, for some reason, tend to clunk on our application. Mine does it on the right rear and it's happened to a few others on here also.

My initial guess before even reading the topic was that it was probably the coilover.

I thought it was the trailing arm, changed that bushing, nada

Completely removed that strut, inspected it, and used an impact wrench to tighten the top bolt, and used a torque wrench to torque the 12mm nuts when attaching it to the car, impact wrenched the bottom two 19mm bolts that attach the strut to the hub.

after that, I noticed that the control arm (the adjustable one) moved easily... which is weird, I thought these things weren't supposed to move, meaning if you twist the whole arm twists.... I mean some flex is ok, but not where the thing can go end to end, and both the top and bottom of the spherical bearing's housing to almost touch the nut that holds it in place.

Hence my thought that it is the damned control arm, I can't think of anything else to check, shoot, I even changed the exhaust hangers thinking it was my Greddy Evo2... javascript:emoticon(':drinking:')
:drinking: :drinking: I'm diving deeper into thoughts of modifying the control arms

Nothing is binding, and it was not happening for the first month and a half of use of the JIC's... I checked everything, and had a friend of mine, a mechanic take a look, and he said it has to be the control arm. And everything has a clear path, no metal to metal contact anywhere near the strut.

I'm looking into a permanent modification to some control arms I have acquired, and will test that once I get the parts I need.

Man, it would be funny if I found the true source to the clunk noise, and fixed it....

this might sound dumb, but check your spare tier and the things around it... maybe one of them is loose ;)

It's the pillowball mount most likely.

Mine was the EXACT same way (even though I got them with ~10 or 15K miles on them). I had them for a few months, then all of a sudden a clunking noise developed.

Talking to a buddy of mine and a guy that worked at JIC, we narrowed it down to the pillowball mount.

I checked the pillowball mount, and everything looks, and feels like it did when it came out of the box....

I'll look into it though, thanks

Unless you pulled it out of the car and completely disassembled it, it's very difficult to get a real idea of the condition.

i pulled the whole strut out, the mount was tight, it moved as it should, but no play, as in if I pulled it up, or pushed down on it I did not feel any movement.

the only thing I noticed that had some play was the control arm.

i have small noise comming from my suspensions too... so i took it to toyota and told them to tell me where the noise is comming from for $85 (never again)

This was their solution:
START BY changing 2 front links, rear ball joint and bushing of stabalizer bar.
Estimate: 365 + 110 + 215 + tax

:0D
i espacially liked the "start by"
