RPM jumped during acceleration on 4th gear

My car drives fine... no problems. Yesterday i noticed something wiered when i was going onto the hight way. I shifted to 4th gear and started accelerating while observing the rpm gauge. It was at 2.5 then all of a sudden, it jumped to 3.5, then went back to 2.7.... i didnt feel a difference in acceleration or anything else but i did hear the engine rore a litle louder.

What can cause this? I dont know much about mechanics but could it be the clutch disc slipping or what?

Pretty good guess for a "non-mechanical" person!


Your situation may have other root causes, but the most likely is exactly that, a slipping clutch.

What is your mileage on this vehicle? On the current clutch? Are you the original owner?

Keep in mind, there are several reasons a clutch can "slip", as well...

NOTE: Oh, yeah... in addition, as another consideration, even if you don't notice this in "earlier" gears, the taller the gear, the more resistance you will have, creating greater load on the clutch, and as the motor finds it's "torque sweet spot", it will have a better chance of breaking the clutch disk "loose" and allowing "slip".

my car is a 99 with almost 200k KM... im not the original owner so i have no idea od previous repairs... i got it when it was at 180k KM.

I'm planning to take it to toyota for a good inspection and a list of things to repair.. for sure i will change the timing belt...
