tranny jumps?

Postby rewmomi » Wed Apr 02, 2008 11:04 pm

Hey I just replaced my tranny and I have been noticing that when I start the car in the morning the shift from park to r or to d is very hard. The car actually shackes a little. And when I hit the gas just a little it will jump. I checked my engine bay and there is something like a bracket attached to the front headers that were just danggling there. I dont know if that has anything to do with it but yea any help would be nice thanks.

I've seen this problem in a lot of cars that have been driven hard, and in a lot of cars where someone accidentally knocks the gearshift, say, into reverse while moving 15-20mph in drive. It has something to do with the automatic clutch gripping the gear as you shift into whichever gear from whichever gear you're moving out of (i.e. the teeth are bent, maybe some are missing on the gear, or perhaps the clutchplate itself is warped). It's a serious repair, and isn't really worth doing on a Toyota until it's completely broken. It could drive with a hard knock from reverse to drive for another 10 years.
