Changing the rear ABS Sensor... Is it a DIY?

Changing the rear ABS Sensor... Is it a DIY?

I have the ABS light on in my 99 SLE. The jerk off mechanic broke it when changing rear struts, but he is not replacing it. That battle is over. My question is can I change it myself? And does anyone have a diagram of how?

Thanks!

Same thing happened to me and i am just about to get my abs sensor done aswell

Very big pain in the ass to get out cause theres soo much dirt holding it in.
Had to break mine out in pieces with a needle nose.

This part is very expensive, plus i had no luck finding a aftermarket replacement.

The abs sensor is the grey plastic pieace attached behind the rotor, and the wire goes somewhere into the back seat

It's not really that hard to change the rear ABS sensor.

SleeperSolara - Thank you for that very detailed response. Any chance you would like to provide some insight on how to go about it? Maybe provide some suggestions and add to the valuable insight that you have already provided...."It's not really that hard to change the rear ABS sensor."

Thanks!

You have to remove the bottom half of the backseat to get to the ABS sensors.

When you remove the rear, you'll see a black cable running from the inside to the outside.....its held in by a rubber plug that you'll have to just pop off. From there you can pull it out from the outside....you'll also have to remove the rear wheels as well.

The outside portion of the ABS sensor is connected to the strut, held in by one bolt and a clip the holds it in place.

To install the new ABS sensor, just do the opposite of how you just uninstalled the bad one.

Price for a new ABS sensor is somewhere along the lines of $130 to $175 from the dealer...can't remember the exact price b/c its been so long ago that I had to do mine.

.......hope this helps you out.

Sweet - just got a used ABS sensor for $45 shipped with a 90 day warranty. I will change it when I change my rims for winter. It actually started to snow in Indiana today!

when i replaced mine, it was front passenger side, having a very hard time removing the old one, twist, turn, pull, wd-40, liquid wrench, nothing work, because it was fused into the hole, even thought the service manual instruct to remove the 10mm bolt, then pull it out.
so i broke off the old one, bad anyway, use a drill and drill out the remaining, and file off all the rust around the hole cylinder wall before a new one will fit in.

OK- So I changed the rims back to stock for the winter and replaced the R.R. ABS Sensor... What a pain in the D$CK getting the old one out ! (as Bronzemaxell said). I broke every piece off the side and it had to be in 10 pieced before I got it all out. Even getting the new one in was almost impossible. Anyway, after resetting the ABS computer, the light came back on in 2 minutes with the same code (3 flashes pause 3 flashes = right rear ABS Sensor). Anyone have any other thoughts other than the new sensor is bad (it could be since it was used and they are sending another), but any additional suggestions?

"kaarona1" Yeah it could be the ABS unit actuator....
Where did you get your ABS sensor from??

"AllShowNoGo" Yeah i had gotten a wrecked Solara ABS sensor at the salvage yard, and replaced my OEM one for the wrecked Soalra ABS sensor and i still had the light on....
Well when i got my A/C fixed i had to get a new brake master cylinder and the guy checked my ABS light also.
He said my ABS actuator is messed up.
The valve or somethin' in the ABS actuator unit for the rear wheel [which eva threw the code] is messed up. So the only way to fix it is to replace the whole ABS unit....

how much did the part cost and what would cause this part to fail. My abs light came after a crappy suspension install so i hope this not the case.
