instrument cluster questions

Postby superwhite06 » Mon Oct 08, 2007 3:34 pm

Hey guys, I got a few questions about the gauge cluster in a 2001 Toyota Solara 4cyl auto.

I was trying to change the cluster from green to blue using a transparent blue vinyl, so I had to remove the needles in order to get the vinyl on the back of the gauges. Well, long story short, I put the needles on and now I don't think the fuel gauge needle is working properly, I filled the tank up and the needled stayed at below 3/4 of a tank and didn't move after the tank was filled. What could be the problem??

Also, could I just swap a gauge cluster in there that I found on Ebay?? or is the mileage stored in the cluster??

Thanks for the help!!

If you change clusters, the mileage is stored on the ECU. You'll have to take it to the dealer to reset the clust to show the actual mileage. The cluster just keeps an on-going total.

But if it is stored in the ECU would it just show up on the new cluster?? If it was stored in the cluster itself, then I would have to bring it ot the dealer to have them change it, right?

That was my understanding from another website. I might be wrong.

It is stored in both.
You'll NEED to take it to the dealer (or anybody else with the right tools and knowhow) to update your new cluster.
Just by pluging it in will not automatically update the cluster.

Is resetting the odometer possible with the older analog counters? I would assume the car still has a memory on the ecu, whether the cluster is digital or not.

FYI: No Solara has an analog odometer, but you're right the readings are stored both ways... At least my friend's Volvo did.

Why don't you just get different color bulbs? Unless you want to change the color of the gauge needles there no reason to take them off.

Yeah, I was referring to my accord beater car. The odo stopped working a while back and I had to replace the cluster. I've never updated the odo b/c I wasn't sure if the mileage was stored on the ecu with an analog odo.
