Check Engine Code P1135

Check Engine Code P1135

Postby nj99solara » Sun Jan 16, 2005 7:30 pm

Hello everybody, my cel came on last night and I am pissed because I only had my car for close to a month (67,000 miles approx). I know this has been discussed before but when I did a search I found out that the code was for the o2 sensor but no one mentioned how much it was to have replaced or if it was a do it yourself type job.
So I wanted to know is it a easy job or should this be handled by pro's?
And how much is the sensor?
Thanks in advance for all the help

at least it is not a knock sensor.
A/F Sensor Circuit
Range/Performance Malfunction
(Bank 1 Sensor 1)
Open or short in A/F sensor circuit
 A/F sensor (bank 1, sensor 2)
ECM

you have a few routes you can take.

1. junk yard
2. aftermarket (Bosch, etc replacements)
3. dealers

I paid $135/each for the OE upstream O2 sensors from my mechanic through a local dealer. Pretty salty, but it didn't take any time or research.

It's not too hard to do it yourself, and save a bunch of money.

I did not modify the car in any way. I've only had it a month as of yesterday,so that's why it's pissing me off so much. I had a 30 day/1,000 mile warranty from the used dealer I bought it from and of course the 30 days is up and i'm over the mileage by about 150 (perfect timing huh?)

No it doesn't. Mine is from Canada and it throws the 1135 code.

Anyways, it's the O2 sensor on the rear bank header.

It will be a bitch if you plan to DIY. I did it in 1-2 hour with my midget hand.

This is copied and pasted from the factory service manual. They are the ones who say it's california spec only.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT:
Read freeze frame data using TOYOTA hand–held tester or OBD II scan tool. Because freeze frame records
the engine conditions when the malfunction is detected, when troubleshooting it is useful for determining
whether the vehicle was running or stopped, the engine warmed up or not, the air–fuel ratio lean or rich, etc.
at the time of the malfunction.
1 Check voltage between terminal HAFR, HAFL of ECM connector and body
ground.
PREPARATION:
(a) Remove glove compartment (See page SF–71).
(b) Turn the ignition switch ON.
CHECK:
Measure voltage between terminals HAFR, HAFL of the ECM
connector and body ground.
OK:
Voltage: 9 ~ 14 V
OK Check and replace ECM (See page IN–31).

Thanks everybody for all of the replies and help. I had a co-worker of mine check the code again because he has a much better scanner than the one they use at auto zone and his told us it was the o2 sensor on bank one. I took it out and tried to clean it up a little to see if that would help and cleared the code, but yesterday after about 2 hours of driving it did come back on so I will try to get one by next week change it and clear the code again and see what happens next.

*Thread Revival*

Mine just pulled two instances of P1135 today while driving home. I bought my car new in 2000 from a dealership in Jersey, so i'm pretty sure its not california spec. And I have an I4, so I dont have a rear bank. Can someone post the service manual description for the 5SFE P1135 code?

After I got to autozone before he checked it, I unscrewed and retightened the gas cap since I know thats probably one of the most common cause of CEL. CEL gone now in any case, I think he cleared it after he read the code, I'll see if it comes back on.

I have CAI but my exhaust is stock. I've had it for about a year, just reoiled the K&N filter for my 60K maint about 50 days ago.

My haynes manual say something about the heated oxygen sensor and to test the voltage. (on the I4, the connector is convenently loaded right by the cylinders, with a wire leading to the sensor in the front header) I'll give it a shot if it comes back on.

Looks easy enough to replace, so if it comes back, I'll just replace it.

---UPDATE---

Well it came back about 4 days later. After a bit of research, it seems pretty common problem - Code P1135.

Found out from a VIN run from a dealership that I actually do have Cali spec, even though I bought my car new from a Toyota Dealership in Jersey - So its A/F sensor for me (Its O2 sensor for the non-cali's)

For 5SFE, dealership wants to charge $247.12 for a replacement A/F sensor. Part Number 89467-33020. I did some research online and found out Denso makes an OEM Spec A/F sensor as well for the 5SFE platform. The one that replaces 89467-33020 is Denso part 234-9010, which is around 90 bucks from sparkplugs.com. So thats coming via 2 day mail now.

Heres the OE replacement info for Denso aftermarket sensors.

http://www.densoaftermarket.com/catalog ... del=SOLARA

Info on the A/F / O2 sensor is hard to find, so I decided to post it all here so other people who acually search can find the info if they need it. I'll be doing some sensor and valve cover (unrelated) surgery later on this week.
