Alternator price?

Alternator price?

Got a call back from my garage today quoting me $325 (CAD) for replacing my alternator (with a rebuilt one I might add)
Did I just get ripped off? Feels like it....

Denso Reman Alternator - $246.99 + $35 core charge
Beck/Arnley Reman Alternator - $177.79 + $65 core charge
thats prices in usd as of June 2011.
seems like they charged quite a bit for labor. perhaps they had problems with the hardware and charged you more because of it. i broke a bolt on mine that was seized and all i was trying to do was replace the belt. but i ended up having to source a new bolt and get the other part machined out where the old bolt broke off. so its possible that is fair.

If you replace your alternator, you might as well upgrade up to a Highlander.

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/ ... eluiZ9ci9i $125 i'm sure Pep Boys or Advanced Auto would be around the same price.

A side job mechanic could have put it in for you $50 bucks maybe...If they do a good job at the shop and you are happy with their service then get it over with.

^^^^ Wow. the prices i posted above actually are advance auto prices. im surprised autozone has one for so much cheaper. while im on the subject... it seems to me that upgrading to a toyota highlander alternator (more amps) would potentially put more resistance on the engine, i know when i work on home standby generators made by Generac or others that the more power (watts) they put out the bigger and more powerful the engine has to be. but maybe its such a small difference in the car alternator that it wouldnt be noticed? i dunno.

people have switched over to the highlander alt with no probs. In fact when mine goes I will do so as well. Its a nice amperage gain over the camry/lexus/solara one.
