Major Service Price Inquiry

Major Service Price Inquiry

Postby boneezy » Sun Sep 14, 2008 2:38 am

So I just hit 120k miles, and being that I havent done a full service since 60k... which was all BS since all they did was drain and fill, I ended up actually flushing all the vital fluids except brakes and steering 20k miles later... Anyways, after running all the searches up n down the site, I have a great idea of whats needed to have done.. So for anyone else who has had major maintenance recently, particularly concerning a 90k and 120k service, how much did everything run you? Did you go to the $tealer or went local? Is there anything beyond a Haynes manual that should be strictly performed by a shop? I'd like the $700 that I have set aside for all maintenance purposes to go as long a way as possible.

the biggest thing to have replaced if you havent already done so is your timing belt, also the most expensive to have done also. The belt is fairly cheap, but the labor is gonna kick your @$$. Next would be spark plugs, NGK or Denso's can be had for under 40$ shipped and you could spend thirty to forty minutes putting them in yourself or add an additional ~$100 to the labor. A fluid flush is relativity easy if you have access to a hose. You can do multiple drain and fills to your transmission to 'flush' it and on the last time you do so could also take apart the pan, replace the gasket and filter for under $20. This is the gist of what a shop will do under a 'tune up' be its all depending, we all have different shops we go to. Ive heard, through past posts of this topic that people pay between 300-700$.

All this is dependent on how mechanically inclined you are and if you have the proper tools, check the FAQ/Tutorial section, a lot of people have spent time doing the above and writing up about it & taking pictures. If I were you I would get the timing belt done at a good shop or by someone who knows what they are doing, and do the rest yourself....but thats just what I did...

TIMING BELT!!!!

first and foremost... when running a timing belt past 90k you're engine is running on borrowed time. so get on that. also get the water pump and serpentine belt done while your at it. Also, if you're not taking your car to the dealer for service (which i doubt cuz thats askin to pay as much as possible) do go there and get a toyota timing belt. i wouldnt mess with an after market timing belt. water pump is up to you, you can get that from an autoparts store and it should be fine.

i got lucky with mine as it was changed at 77k at the dealer which is when i bought the car... doubt i woulda bought it otherwise.

then just like unbalanced wood said, your sparks plugs and fluid changes are also overdue. flush your cooling system, change your trans fluid (manual) with some fresh 75w90 and your power steering would be a good idea too. i think based on the location of the v6 ps pump... id just siphon out the fluid reservoir a few times. finally change your fuel filter. this can be a monster as well. while your at it might as well change the oil to. and next time you do brakes do your brake fluid if you haven't already.

i think thats everything. the second paragraph you should be able to do yourself if your pretty car savy. also i think there are write ups for all the procedures on here.

hope this long expensive list was helpful....

Just be careful when doing brake fluid, it can have a lot of water or other contaminants by 120k, but it's something I would ask you're service guy for 1 reason: after that long all the crap in there can actually be all that's holding the system together. Oh and plug wires, just in case you haven't.

So i talked to all 3 Toyota's here for a quote. All three dealers put the service including: timing belt, water pump replacement, drive belt replacement, and crank seals replacement at around $960 including tax. :o

THEN, I failed my smog check since I need a new $240 O2 sensor...

Are these prices fair???? I think hell no. There has to be a testament from someone paying MUCH less then what the $tealer is trying to get from me. If there are, what exactly did you have done? I was looking more in the $600 range, but one thousand??? I don't want a new car :(

I have seen a couple of 1MZ's done by independent shops for around $500, for timing, seals, and water pump. Goodyear makes a kit that comes the pulleys and belt for the 1MZ. That's what I always get along with the Goodyear serpentine belt. I figure it's all out, might as well replace every wear component.
Let's just pretend I didn't grow up, or you're going to be terribly disappointed.

I just got a price from an independant shop of 880$ cdn (taxes included) for replacing the timing belt+ water pump+ seals on my Solara V6 2005 with only 60K miles. Is it a sound investment to have the other parts other than the timing belt to be replaced after such a low mileage ?
