Well, I know some of you guys live in the south but for you northern guys, what kind of tires do you run in the winter? I'm looking for something all season preferably, what do you reccomend, that gets good winter traction?

well i live in British Columbia of Canada so we got tons of snow up here, but i would never recommend a all season tire for winter, then again i dont know what your winters are like, but for a great winter tire, Michelin X-ice! use them on our larger family car. my sister uses hanook ice bears and they are good as well for a compact 95 civic 3 door. so ya... and we still slide around when there is a large amount of snow and ice, but its a huge difference over all seasons.

i bought my solara (5-spd, V6) with almost new all seasons on it. with ABS and those tires i hated driving in the winter. at 1st i thought the problem was the ABS for stopping in snow and ice, but found out it was the all season tires after i had some used blizzaks put on. now it feels like a four wheel drive truck for take offs. i can also stop better and steer while stopping. couldn't do that with the all seasons. if you do get winter tires be careful not to put them on too early or leave them on after the winter season. they are very soft and wear quickly when on dry pavement. my recommendation: go with winter tires if you get alot of snow and ice and have a long winter season.

This will be my first winter with my Solara. My tires were bald when I bought car, and I put 15K additional on it. The two fronts were General Altimax HP's and the car never hydroplaned except the last week I had them(through some pretty substantial rains). After reading a number of reviews(other than Tirerack reviews)- I found that a number of the Audi and Volvo crowd seem to enjoy the Winter Traction of the Altimax HP as well. It is kinda finky looking tread- but I'll find out how they do. I bought a set of 4.

I commute 100 miles a day back and forth. My first 3 miles leaving are all down a steep winding hill, and coming home I must go back up that steep winding hill. It is usually the last few streets plowed- as it only affects a few people. The rest of the commute is Interstate. If these don't work so well- I can use my 4WD Frontier on the bad days.

I've had and still have the Bridgestone G009, those are pretty good for all season tires.
