Can I just cut this?

Can I just cut this?

Postby mig0s » Sat Oct 02, 2010 4:43 pm

Sup y'all, I've been trying to take off my OEM shifter for the last flippin HOURS and for those who have done it we all know that little pin that keeps the plastic cap is a beeetch to take off. I've tried, like other people suggested, with a screw driver and a hammer but with no success. It doesn't even budge. I'm wondering, can I just cute the plastic cap which is circled in yellow?

I'll just cut through a corner so I can take off the oem shifter and install my twm shifter. Since both the front and back ends of the plastic cap would still be secured... is it OK?

Thanks

........

I was banging that pin for more than an hour!!! I tried both sides and it doesn't move AT ALL. Do you think I can saw the OEM shifter and leave the pin there? I'm getting desperate ...... :bad-words:

take off the entire center console around the shifter. dont try and take short cuts or you will regret it.
i think best bet is to unbolt seats to get to the screws on the sides of console.

then you should have a better direct angle at the pin

I don't think a direct angle will help... some people here said they tapped "gently" while angled and it started to came out. For me, no matter how gently or hardly I tap it doesn't move even a little bit...

update: since I tried and tried and tried again, the pin is just stuck. I decided to cut it. When taking off the shifter, it broke in 2 pieces. At first I was like FFFFUUUUUU but then when I installed the ss and everything was just fine. only side effect is when I put my hand on shifter, I can slightly move it. Installing the short shifter was a total bitch! And I lost the bottom clip, the "speed clip", broke the cap and lost the horizontal shifter leg's bolt. Wow. But I'm glad I finally installed it and I love the result and everything can be considered "fine".
