Replacement Key for Gen1 (99)

Replacement Key for Gen1 (99)

Hey guys,

The little plastic loop on my keys that affix the key to the keyring have broken on both of my OEM Keys (They made it 11 years...not bad). I already lost one of the keys, so if I lose my last remaining key, I will be screwed. It's already fallen off the key ring a few times, so I just put it in my house and have been restricted to driving my Deville in fear of losing the precious key.

So obviously, I need to make copies for my Solara. Has anybody gone about doing so? I'm hoping to save a few bucks and not need to get it done at Toyota, but I'm not sure if they keys from a 99 have a chip and need programming. If not, I'll just bring it to the local hardware shop and get copies made and be on my way.

Any input on what I need to do (and estimated cost - I'm getting married and need to save!) would be greatly appreciated.

if your key is a transponder key, i think you can buy another transponder key on ebay, get it cut anywhere, then program the new key to the car. (using the old key in the procedure to validate the new one)
i dont remember how to tell if you have a transponder key or not... try searching to find out, and you can also find the procedure to program the new key on this site i believe if you look hard enough.

Works perfectly. Shipping might take like 2 weeks but it's free. I've had good experiences with this site so no worries. And I'm pretty sure there's no chip in our keys.

But I don't know how did you "broke" your OEM keys lol I have 3 pairs of keys (2 OEM, 1 spare) and they are all like new :P

I had them in my pocket and laid down on the ground, rolled over, and crack...the thin little plastic just cracked.

since the end of your key broke i'll assume theres no chip in it. if it had a chip i think the part that broke would be metal rather then plastic. i replaced my broken key with this one from ebay. theres many different styles and colors. its all metal, so no plastic to break.
