Cranks but wont start. No codes

Cranks but wont start. No codes

Postby JamesT » Fri Oct 02, 2009 4:00 pm

Arrgghhh....

The car ran fine a while ago. Now, it cranks but won't start. I tried reading for any codes and didn't get any.

The oil pressure light comes on after I try to start it - could that be related?

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Everything is plugged in and reading correctly.

I changed the timing belt about 30 miles ago.

what yr is your camry? mine just started giving me problems and i checked it out today. turned out to be the distributor. theres a very simple way to check if thats ur problem, take one of the plugs that connect to your spark plugs (the rubber piece that goes in the hole) and pull it out. insert a screwdriver inside the plug and have someone try to start the car. as he/she is cranking the car, touch the screwdriver onto the motor. if it sparks then the distributor is fine. if it doesnt spark, then u will need to change it. if u need any help let me know, i can help u out over the phone or could drive to u and help. what part of chicago do u stay in?
almost there...what do you think?

oil pressure light SHOULD come on when engine is stopped but key is on.

did you touch any of your relocated harness when you did the t-belt in a way that it would maybe knock something loose?

oh.... I never really paid attention to what lights were on when they key was on but not running - thanks.

I've rechecked my harness many times and now that I have ruled that out (for the most part) I thought I would ask here.

I'm going to try replacing the Spark plug wires and the gas cap - I'm running out of ideas.

S15lara,

It's the distributorless ignition. I'm going to try new wires and see if that works. Also, I'm up in the North Suburbs.

i just went throught hell on my 93 camry, it cranked, but no start, turn out the distributor and fuel pump went at once.

engine need basic elements to berunning,
1. air
2. spark
3. fuel
4. correct timing

if timing belt is 30 miles, there is a chance it was loose and jumped a tooth or two

if you suspect fuel problem, buy a can of starting fluid from walmart, $2 or $3, remove intake hose, and spray at throttle body while the butterfly is open, and close the intake hose, and crank engine, if it start and shut off right away, maybe ur fuel system has problem.

and check spark as described by S15lara

as for air, make sure the MAF or MAP is connected and working.

I think I found it!

While testing everything at the ECM again, I noticed the resistance from the crank sensor seemed off.....

Went and had a look and found one of the two wires was almost completely severed right at the connector. I just ordered a replacement and, with any luck, I'll be good to go once that arrives!

Thank you for your help everyone.

strange that that didn't set a code. maybe it was still getting enough signal to make the ecu think it was good.

i remember after doing the water pump (and t-belt/seals/etc) on the miata, i accidentally left the harness for the crank angle sensor loose, and the w/p pulley rubbed through it after a few miles. it started bucking and misfiring above about 2500-3000 rpm, and was showing MISFIRE codes, not crank angle sensor codes. i wasted a lot of money on coils and wires before i found the damaged crank sensor wiring. i was able to repair and relocate the harness and it's been fine ever since.

Those little things are such a pain...

This is the second connector I've found like this. The first one was on the fuel pressure VSV.

When I have the time, I'm going to replace all the connectors as I don't really trust the old, beat up wires and connectors. So far, I've only done four or five.
