how to take out the glove compartment? rattling sound?

Postby m126531 » Sun Jul 05, 2009 9:55 pm

hi guys. i have a 2001 i4 and there is this rattling sound coming from somewhere near or behind the glove compartment when i drive. the sound only occurs when i drive above 50 mph or something like that. i suspect its something loose from behind the glove compartment. the sound is like something is hitting against something else.
please teach me how to take the glove compartment portion out
or give me suggestions about how to solve the sound problem

anything would help because i am basically a noob to fixing cars.

and im a high school student so i dont have money to get it checked out at a shop

thanks very much :]

There should be 3 screws on the top of the glove box.
And 1 bolt which is 10mm on the right behind the trim piece that run along the passenger door area.
And 1 screw or bolt on the lower left side.
2000 Solara SE auto V6. Diamond White Pearl.
Top Speed Run finished at 130 mph. :o
Too many modifcations for the signature.

I had a similar problem. My problem ended up being a plastic screen in the wheel well that had become loose and made a clicking noise over bumps or at high speed.

I went through the same frustration (thinking it was something behind the glovebox, etc.) until I ran into a mechanic who had seen the problem repeatedly in Solaras he had worked on-always the screen on the passenger front wheel well. He lifted the car and that was the culprit. He reattached the screen and I never heard the noise again.

I wish I could remember the exact name of the part that was making the noise but it was something in the wheel/suspension area on the underside of the passenger's side wheelwell area.

Hope this helps.

:)
