Fog Light Problem

Fog Light Problem

Postby gnaw_divad » Tue Nov 18, 2008 8:18 pm

My right fog light keeps going out. This is the third time in just a few months and the last time I changed the bulbs was just 2 weeks ago. The left one has held strong for over a year but the right one just keeps burning out.

I use the same bulbs in both left and right. Nokya Yellow. I know they burn out faster than normal but 2 weeks? Any suggestions?

It could be your harness, the wires that the harness itself is composed of, or it could simply be the switch. What I suggest doing, is turning your fogs on. When they work that is, then taking your hand and messing around with the cables in the bumper, for both sides. See if anything happens. I'd also pull the plugs out of the lenses and inspect them for burns or any type of electrical short. I'd also run a test light throughout the entire line of wire for the fog lights. From the switch, to the fuse box and so on down to the light itself. Hope you can find your problem.

Hm.. okay.

But when I change the bulb it will work for 2 weeks before it burns out. Does the problem w/ the wiring harness/cables cause the bulb to burn out faster?

I would assume that it would be the fuse or the harness if the bulbs just didn't work but for it to just continuously burn out is a little weird esp. while the other bulb is working just fine. :o

Thanks for the input guys, I'll try changing it once more. But its just such a pain to get to that bulb....

Clean the bulb with alcohol before you install it and DO NOT touch it with your fingers. (vinyl gloves or other)

the natural skin oils can cause temperature gradients in the bulb which cause them to crack and then burn out.

check all your wiring, from the bulb to the fuse box. it sounds like there's a short somewhere, like there's an open wire touching the body or something.

did you notice your fog light goes out when you drive over a bumpy patch?

also, take note with what sentinel said. it's a pet peeve of mine when i see other people install bulbs while touching the glass. if it's someone i know, i'll stop them and clean the glass off and install without touching the glass.

this could also be a source of the problem. especially if you're doing lengthy drives with the fog lights on the entire time (hotter temp in one area causes the oiled glass to expand faster than surrounding glass, causing it to fracture and break the vacuum of the bulb....i.e. dropping an ice cube in boiling water)

pray that it's the bulb and not the wiring....i hate messing around with wiring and non-audio electrical.

ya, I really hope it's not the wiring. I'm usually very careful when installing bulbs. I never touch the glass and if I do i always wipe it off before I put them in but I am hoping that's the case this time cause i wouldnt know where to start with the wiring.
