02 Solara v6 tune up questions...

Postby ehop » Thu Oct 23, 2008 6:20 pm

im gettin ready to do a pretty decent tune-up to a friends 02 Solara v6. thing is i dont kno about solara's, dont think im an idiot cuz i kno about cars and i've rebuilt my honda engine and work for benz i just never worked on toyota.

these engines use synthetic oil right? 10w30? and how much does it take?

arent iridium dual tip plugs recomended by toyota? i personally only use one tipped plugs but that has to do with laws of electricity, but its not my car and i think toyota says two. also what is the gap suppose to be? i kno most plugs come pregapped but im still checkin them.

wheres the fuel pump relay or fuse? i'd like to keep as much gas off my driveway as i can doin the fuel filter.

sorry for the newb questions but im tryin to find out everything needed quick so i can hopefully do it all this weekend.

thanks!

Sorry, can't help you out on that one, I can tell you I have a 04 v6 and mine uses 5 W 30 (mobile 1 full synthetic extended performance) seems to be the best bang for the buck and I'm not too fond of "racing oil" in a unbuilt engine IE: Royal Purple
I haven't had to venture into the spark plug domain yet though. Check the owners man on how many quarts to use, I can't remember 5 or 5 1/2

I'll move this to the Gen1 forums. You'll get a quicker response there.

Dual platinum tips are recommended. (but not necessary, single iridium are fine). Stick with NGK or Denso for plugs, wires etc.

10w30 or 5w30 oil works. Most people (including myself) use synthetic but it isn't necessary. 5 quarts should do it.

Regarding the fuel filter, good luck getting the damn thing off to begin with.

I thought our cars used single tipped iridium. Double tipped iridiums might be better, but not really sure if its OEM.

me: 99 sle v6 NA

oil: mobile 1 5w-30. you can go synthetic or natural. if it's got synthetic in it already, then stick with synthetic. 5 quarts will do you good, get 6 if you want to use one to flush out the residual oil.

spark plugs: denso iridium IK20 (IK22 if you are FI) they come pregapped. i think OEM came with single tipped, but almost everyone on here who uses denso's use the IK20 or IK22's with great results. be careful, the 1mz is a transverse engine, which means that you have to get to three plugs that are between the engine and the firewall (check the tutorial section on this forum if you can't figure out howto get to the plugs in the rear. there are 6 plugs and three wires, btw).

quick tip, use denso whenever possible. denso is the OEM manufacture, and will show the best compatability. unlike bosch (for example) where some of the sensors get goofy on solara's and don't work out after a few hundred miles.

don't know about the fuel pump relay or fuse. good luck with those.

also, you're gonna want to inspect the timing belt. it's an 02, which means it should be coming up to 90k miles (if it hasn't already passed it)....90k is about the milage you want to check the belt at.

also, don't forget the other fluids: check power steering, brake, and transmission....
