URGENT! Gen 1 GAWR?

URGENT! Gen 1 GAWR?

Postby funboy102 » Thu Oct 23, 2008 10:32 am

Does anyone have the 1999 Solara V6 SE GAWR? That's Gross Axle Weight Rating... I found a good deal on some Max Performance summer tires (even higher than UHP summer tires) and I want to use them for my car on track days. They're the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 (OE tire on F-430  )

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp ... es&place=0

Only problem is, the load index is 87, the stock Solara load index for the V6 is 91. Tire Rack called me and told me that the load index might be too low, so they'll need the Gross Axle Weight Rating for the car, front and back, and it needs to be lower than 2400 lbs, (1200 lbs per tires).

Can anyone help please?

Wow, that's an amazing price for GS-D3 tires. I was gonna get them for my Camry after my Toyo T1-R wears out. I ran into a lot of problems when buying tires for my car because of the load index too. I don't know the GAWR for Camrys and Solaras but I don't think you should get the 16 inch tires since the load index is way too low and the tires will fail on you, especially for track use. If your budget allows, you should get 17 inch wheels and 215/45/17 tires instead so the load index will match factory specs.

yah....on really high performance tires such as the eagle f1s and the t1r's they have lower load indexes for higher profile tires since they have soft sidewalls designed to flex and be ridden on when pushed to the limit (i.e. tracked)

^ Wow, I didn't realize high performance tires have softer side walls so they can be ridden on. No wonder whenever I take an extremely fast turn on my T1-R's the sidewall always fold under. I was always annoyed by it because it leaves scuff marks on the tire walls, especially after I just tire shine my tires. haha.

lol...yup yup....it gives more surface contact area...but that's also another reason why they have such bad tread wear, because they're so soft

it was a really strange transition from my spt's over to the t1rs, because the spt's have very solid sidewalls, so highspeed lane changes were crisp and solid. with the t1rs, it almost feels squiggly since the tirewalls flex. it just took awhile to get to, since it was just as precise, but it just felt different. my buddy with a gts had the same comments when he switched to his eagle f1s

what also seems to be the pattern too is that softer sidwall tires squeal more when pushed to the limit compared to harder sidewalls...more often than not, hard sidewall tires just let go at their gripping limit instead of squealing, while soft sidewall tires squeal all the way to their grip limit, which is useful as a warning

good or bad on that point...dunno...just what you like, I guess

well, Tire Rack called me back and said that from his research, he did find the Gross Axle Rating (how much each axle can take) and it is much more than the tire load index. Seems like I'm going to find another set of tires than.
