As for the 99 Solara V6 5sp, I've been running premium and works well. I use Chevron and Shell, and tried 76 once. I'm scared to try non-top tier.

For the heck of it, I tried 87 regular. I got 1 more mpg but at the expense of really really crappy performance, and major pinging anytime I loaded the engine. I thought it was a fluke, so I ran another tank of Chevron 87, and same thing happened... mpg stayed at 26 (I've been getting 25 running premium), car has no balls on acceleration, and pings.

Went back to Premium for 2 tanks, and now I'm trying 89 Chevron. It still pings when I push it hard, but performance is nearly as good as premium. And mpg is upper 25. I'll likely stay 89 now, and 91 when I want a lil more fun.

But just to rehash: 87 sucks big time on performance, but got a pretty good jump in mpg. It's a tossup.

Thanks for the info guys.

Yes i know my maxima to be very picky when it comes to fuel. I'll never run anything less than 91 in that car.

Where does CostCo get it's gas from? Cuz in my Solara, Maxima, Camry, Previa, Volvo, Altima, Tiburon, my mpg goes way down. Nearly all of them will ping much more easily on CostCo Premium, vs Top Tier. Besides cost, I sorta question the quality of CostCo's pumps. I hope u can shed some light on this.

Stock corners will not melt. I am not too sure about the aftermarket clears but the stocks with the amber in the side will come apart.

It’s sort of complicated. Hear in NC Costco still uses 100% gas. However There is some sort of federal mandate to have all pumps be 90 gas 10% ethanol. Costco in Florida already have started that.

I haven't been able to get a clear answer on where it comes from. I guess gas is fungible and the only thing that makes it different is the stuff added to it on its way to the station.

My solara does very well on the 93 @ Costco, a friend of mine has a GTI on stage two, he is also happy with the gas.

When my Fuel problems started I questioned the gas and tried to go to a couple of other places. I went to a BP and the counter on the pump was reading fast. It took 19 gallons to fill up ( Normally about 17. Tank max is 18.5) I tried another gas station in SC but that gas had water in it.

Where is your Costco located?

I'm in California... I've tried CostCo San Diego about 6 years ago, with my volvo, altima, and tiburon. Felt ok.

More recently, Costco City of Industry, Irvine, and Alhambra.

I've tried going to the same costco for a while, and the results were varied. I'd like to see some consistency. My fav are still 76 and Shell, they provide me the best MPG and performance all the time. Chevron's my runner up. And there's too many that I've tried and refuse to go back to, worse is Arco and Albertsons. I typically drive 23,000 miles/year, I'm filling up about 2x/wk, I like to get the best bang-for-buck. :)

For me it is always BP or Shell (premium at both). I have never really figured out why I prefer those two but I refuse to go anywhere else.
