:o I had to change a CV a few days ago. When I did it brown Liquid (what I assume to be used ATF) came out o the Dif. I have never serviced the diff myself, but wasn’t sure if my 1mz at use
dexron III or not. I lost about half a quart and I’m not sure how worried I should be about it. Is something I should fix tonight or is it not a big deal.

Is there anything better to use then generic Dex III?

the leak was from the removal of the CV. when I saw the stuff coming out I put the new axel in before it all came out. I think I only lost about 1/2 qt.
I checked my Tran level and it was fine. I just figured I would keep an eye on Tran level.

I think I will be doing a drain and fill on both the tranny and dif. I just need the time.

I was going to use Castrol Import ATF. any other recommendations?

auto transmission take like 10-12 qts of ATF, I don't think missing half a qt for a little while is going to make a big difference.

I'm not sure on fluid recommendations for an auto trans, I would just use the Toyota type T.

I saw in another post for a similar issue. There seemed to be a little debate about the tranny and diff being connected or not. My Tran fluid is full but I know I lost a little out the side of the diff??
I'm at 120k and was thinking about flushing it out anyway. I just wonder if the last time I took it in for a flush if they did the diff as well. I doubt it , because the ATF in the diff was brown and the stuff in the tranny still looks brownish pink.

V6 1mZ-FE, ATF and differential fluid are shared

4cyl 5s-FE ATF and differential are separated.

That would be impossible. I figured it out yesterday and fixed my problem. They have separate pools. The fluid is the same in both, and Tran and Diff are connected, just very poorly. I drained the diff and got about 3 quarts of ATF. replaced it with new bright pink ATF closed it up that’s it.

I’m sure about them not sharing fluid well because I had the Tran serviced about 20k miles ago and the stick is still pink. However, when I opened the diff, the ATF there was dark brown.

Does anyone know why Tran and diff are separate?
Also, I was wondering what difference new fluid in the diff would make? I'm hoping for better gas milage. :bday:

If the fluid in the diff is still brown, the difference will be that the interval your diff lasts will be longer. In all likelyness, mpg will not be affected but it's not something that can be surely stated. Whenever parts don't work like they're supposed to and you fix them fuel milage goes up. But brown fluid=bad. Don't wait till it is black.
