Timming Belt and Water pump change

Timming Belt and Water pump change

Postby fxdx » Sat Jun 21, 2008 7:22 am

Is it very difficult to change the timming belt and water pump on a 2000 Solara 4 cyl. My daughter went to start it and it made a horrible noise. When I got there I noticed antifreeze and oil on the ground. The noise is comming from behind the plastic cover on the engine. Thanks for any replys I get !

Timing belt should be pretty hard to replace. You'll have to un-install many parts to access it. I never makes it but it took several hours for Toyota tech with specialized tools to do hte job. My guess...it's not looking good. However the water pump should be really easier but still will take 1-2 hours with proper tools to un-tight the bolt that retinas the belt tensioner.

If you have oil and coolant on the ground AND it makes terrible noises, then the belt could be the least of your concerns.

If a belt breaks, then cams do not turn. And valves that were left fully open could possibly have the piston strike the valve. Making the worst sound you will ever hear. The sound of cash sucking from your wallet.

You need to have a professional mechanic inspect the situation. Keep the repairs light in case the engine needs a rebuild. You don't want them replacing the belt then finding out the engine is toast.

The 4cyl 5S-FE is a non-interference engine, when your timing belt breaks the car will just stop running and not start back up, but it won't bend any valves or leak coolant and oil.

antifreeye AND oil? that is not a good sign...

sounds like the waterpump is toast- probably the seal as well as the bearing seized, or close to it to make noise...as well as one of the engine seals for the oil...if not the oil pump seal-bearing...

long story short...the only way to tell is to get the cover off, the belt off, the seals out, the pumps out, and inspect

and hard? word is that it's easy

I've done 3 V6 timing belts and those are no joke though. But the 5sfe is supposed to be pretty easy in comparison.
