Foggy Headlights

Foggy Headlights

Postby Jillie » Sat Jul 12, 2008 9:49 am

New here :-)

After my 1995 Jeep Cherokee started to show its age, my mom bought herself an 08 Accord and gave me her 2002 Solara... I couldn't be happier :-D It's like a luxurious upgrade for me. So reliable, I get twice the gas mileage and I feel so much safer. It's obviously a little sportier too ;-)

It's and SE... I believe, with some minor modifications, like a spoiler, pin striping, sunroof, power seats, etc. The color is Lunar Metallic.... Very nice car, only 59,000 miles.

My only quips... are the integrity (lots of nicks in the paint from rocks in the road and my neighbor riding her bike too close to the car) but I attribute that to my mother's lack of waxing. Then the head lights, which are turning foggy and yellow. The tail lights, side front lights and fog lights are all clear and bright.

I've seen kits at autozone where you attach a piece to a drill and kind of sand down the exterior of the light. Does this work? How can I tell if the fogginess is caused from the oustide or from the inside?

Anybody else have this problem?

Thanks! Jill

there are alot of products out there that get the job done, just go to a pepboys or watever near ur area.

but for home remedies that work...get white toothpaste, and rub it over the lense(s) till they are covered lightly. u shouldnt have to use too much toothpaste. Let it sit for 10 mins then wash the toothpaste off with warm water. It should be clear now!

works for me on every car ive tried it on.

Welcome.
Try Meguires PlastiX (sp). It works but you have to do it like once a month. Ive never tried ^ toothpaste ^. I say try that first since you probably have some, unless you dont brush your teeth. :D

x2 for the PlastiX, it is great stuff and will make your headlights like-new again. I picked my bottle up at AutoZone.

Welcome to SolaraGuy!

I personally use metal polish on my headlights, but PlastiX sounds like a better recommendation... But I will have to try the toothpaste since I always find myself re-applying a coat of the stuff every month.

I would think twice before I use a sandpaper. That kind of abrasive is a good way to scratch your lenses. You wouldn't use it on your paint, would you? Why use it on your lenses?

High enough grit sandpaper 1500-2500 is actually for automotive paint

I have heard of using wet 1500 then 2k on headlights and using clear after. Also, I would consider using sandpaper on my paint if I was wetsanding....and I wouldnt think twice about it...I am actually considering it. GL with what you decide.

I picked up some PlastX and used a buffing wheel drill attachment to buff them. They came our really good. I didn't sand them first though but oh well, maybe next time.
