whistling noise?! beats me....if it's a hardcore squeak/squeal, then it's your pads about to go (or already gone)....if you get to the point where you hear a metal grinding sound, then your pads are gone, and your rotors are gone too.

why not take off your wheel and inspect the amount of brake pad left (there's a little looking 'window' on the caliper to see how much pad is left).

if it's not the pads or rotors, then you best keep asking and looking, cuz that's all i would say to check out

A whistlin' noise??
Or do you mean a squeakin' noise, that means the piece metal on the brake pad on the back is just movin' around everytime you brake, that's what makin' that squeakin' noise, that's if you have anymore brake pads left.

Ransom,

One guys 'whistle' is another guys 'squeel'. You don't say but I'll assume this just suddenly started and hasn't been happening since brake pads were replaced.

Your front brake pads (front & rear on the gen2) have a flat piece of metal on them designed to come in contact with the edge of your brake rotor when your pads are worn out.

If you ignore the noise that vibrating piece of metal makes (squeel or whistle) you'll soon have the bare metal backing plate in contact with your rotors. If that happens the backing plate usually gouges the rotors and they'll have to be turned or replaced.

Bottom line, pull your front wheels today and check the brake pads.

If this is just standard disk brake squeal you're describing it's caused by the pads vibrating. The fix is easy. Remove the pads and put some of the blue 'goop' made for the purpose (any auto supply store) on the backing plate. Let the goop set up then replace your pads. If the vibration continues, grind the front edge off the pad at a 45 degree angle so the part of the pad that touches the rotor first isn't right on the leading edge.

Cheers

Here is a site that talks about Brake Squeal. Only 3 pages to print.
http://pages.sbcglobal.net/gorf/bmwtips ... queal.html

Here is a technical paper on the same subject and is in fact technical but VERY good. http://delphi.com/news/techpapers/1999/. Scroll down to paper 1999-01-0142 and click on it and you are ready to print. This one is only 8 pages. I printed both paper to keep.

Both of these are very enlightening and well worth the trouble to look them up.
