99 v6 SE my first car and I want to get to know it. Does anyone have experience with repair manuals and can give me opinion on Chilton vs. Haynes Brands.
Chilton brand is a few bucks more expensive is it worth the difference?

Both are ok for the money. But, if you want the ultimate and what the dealer techs use - go for the Toyota manuals. The downside is that they are around $100 or so. I just picked 1 up recently and man it's awesome. I did use the Haynes, but these manuals are much more informative.

Something like this:

I know this is for a '00, but sometimes I see the '99 pop up. Also, I don't think there's that much difference between the '99 and '00.

Thanks for the reply. As someone with no mechanical experience do you think I would benefit from the extra information provided in the toyota manuals?

I don't have much experience either. But, it's very the info is very good. I certainly feel more comfortable with knowing that I'll be doing things like the techs. When it comes down to it, depends on how much you want to do.

There's no comparison. Haynes and Chilton flat out suck IMHO. The Toyota manuals show you everything and I mean everything. There are 3 books for the '99 Solara. At Toyota, they run over $200.00 for all three. One is a diagnostic book that has all of the codes in it, as well as other stuff. One is a schematic that actually has the locations of a wiring and connectors throughout the body as well as the normal diagrams and the other is the one you want to buy if it is the only one you want. It has the repair stuff in it. Each book is about $70.00 at Toyota, but like Astro said, you might find them on ebay. They all cover both the 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder models. It's a big chunk of change, but they really are great books.

Well I don't know about Chilton's or the TSM, but I have a Haynes manual, and I noticed most of the content seems to deviate more of its content (especially pictorial stuff) towards the Lexus ES 300 (it's a shared book for Avalon/Camry).
