Wheel vibrates a lot

Wheel vibrates a lot

Postby rec » Wed May 16, 2007 2:33 pm

When i drive on the freeway my steering wheel vibrates alot because of my tire. Ive had my front tires balanced twice already and it still didnt solve the problem only for a lil bit then it starts back up again. I know i need a alignment so could that be it ?

^^^ These guys are right.

More than likely, your wheels are out of balance. Generally, if it were an alignment issue, your car would pull to one side when driving.

Get your tires balanced and you should be ok.

why only just front wheels balanced?
things are better when on all fours :drinking: HA. jk.
so balance the wheels -- should be good after that :)

make sure the shop isn't doing a static balance (tape weight in the center of the wheel) You might have thrown a weight. Have them check for high spots on the tire while it's being balanced. If it's takin alot of weight in one spot, they should turn the tire 180 degress on the wheel

Check the tires for cupping, and broken belts. Even a well balanced tire will vibrate if it's cupped. Also, get the front end checked out, although it's probably just a wheel / tire issue. To trouble shoot it yourself, rotate the tires front to back. If the vibration changes, then you know that the problem is in the wheels / tires. If you know you need an alignment, get it done, as bad alignment = ruined tires.
Let's just pretend I didn't grow up, or you're going to be terribly disappointed.

well i got the alignment and it made my steering a lot better. More control then before i think. My steering wheel still shakes a lil bit when driving at 80 mphs but i was thinking mayb its because it has 18" rims ? and the ground is screwed up

If you have old tires then they can get out of round. Especially if you had them on the rear of your FWD for too long. Balancing will not help this.

I had the exact same problem! It turned out one of my rims was slightly cracked on the inside of the wheel. No amount of balanceing will fix that. I think it is about $80 to weld a rim. Even a hairline crack will cause vibration of the steering wheel.

i am currently having the same issues. i just put brand new 18' rims and tires on my car. i had it in the shop two days ago trying to figure out what was going on. all four tires are balances and there is no pull to either side.. they said it could and probubly is just the road. most roads have the smallest little heaves that you pretty much need to be laying on the road too see them. and with a low profile tire or one with not much tread it will pick it up and cause vibration in you wheel.

I had the same problem with my previous car. It was a honda accord. Even though I got it balanced it didnt solve the problem. Than it turned out to be the rotors. see if the car vibrates when you brake.
